Universal enveloping algebra

In mathematics, the universal enveloping algebra of a Lie algebra is the unital associative algebra whose representations correspond precisely to the representations of that Lie algebra. Universal enveloping algebras are used in the representation theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras. For example, Verma modules can be constructed as quotients of the universal enveloping algebra. In addition, the enveloping algebra gives a precise definition for the Casimir operators. Because Casimir operators commute with all elements of a Lie algebra, they can be used to classify representations. The precise definition also allows the importation of Casimir operators into other areas of mathematics, specifically, those that have a differential algebra. They also play a central role in some recent developments in mathematics. In particular, their dual provides a commutative example of the objects studied in non-commutative geometry, the quantum groups. This dual can be shown, by the Gelfand–Naimark theorem, to contain the C* algebra of the corresponding Lie group. This relationship generalizes to the idea of Tannaka–Krein duality between compact topological groups and their representations. From an analytic viewpoint, the universal enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra of a Lie group may be identified with the algebra of left-invariant differential operators on the group. (Wikipedia).

Lie groups: Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt theorem

This lecture is part of an online graduate course on Lie groups. We state the Poincare-Birkhoff Witt theorem, which shows that the universal enveloping algebra (UEA) of a Lie algebra is the same size as a polynomial algebra. We prove it for Lie algebras of Lie groups and sketch a proof of

Abstract Algebra - 11.1 Fundamental Theorem of Finite Abelian Groups

We complete our study of Abstract Algebra in the topic of groups by studying the Fundamental Theorem of Finite Abelian Groups. This tells us that every finite abelian group is a direct product of cyclic groups of prime-power order. Video Chapters: Intro 0:00 Before the Fundamental Theorem

RNT1.4. Ideals and Quotient Rings

Ring Theory: We define ideals in rings as an analogue of normal subgroups in group theory. We give a correspondence between (two-sided) ideals and kernels of homomorphisms using quotient rings. We also state the First Isomorphism Theorem for Rings and give examples.

Coverings of the Circle

A covering of a topological space X is a topological space Y together with a continuous surjective map from X to Y that is locally bi-continuos. The infinite spiral is for example a covering of the circle. Notice how every path on the circle can be lifted to the spiral. If a coveri
