Curves

Orthoptic (geometry)

In the geometry of curves, an orthoptic is the set of points for which two tangents of a given curve meet at a right angle. Examples: 1. * The orthoptic of a parabola is its directrix (proof: see ), 2. * The orthoptic of an ellipse is the director circle (see ), 3. * The orthoptic of a hyperbola is the director circle (in case of a ≤ b there are no orthogonal tangents, see ), 4. * The orthoptic of an astroid is a quadrifolium with the polar equation (see ). Generalizations: 1. * An isoptic is the set of points for which two tangents of a given curve meet at a fixed angle (see ). 2. * An isoptic of two plane curves is the set of points for which two tangents meet at a fixed angle. 3. * Thales' theorem on a chord PQ can be considered as the orthoptic of two circles which are degenerated to the two points P and Q. Orthogonality and Orthonormality

We know that the word orthogonal is kind of like the word perpendicular. It implies that two vectors have an angle of ninety degrees or half pi radians between them. But this term means much more than this, as we can have orthogonal matrices, or entire subspaces that are orthogonal to one

Orthocenters exist! | Universal Hyperbolic Geometry 10 | NJ Wildberger

In classical hyperbolic geometry, orthocenters of triangles do not in general exist. Here in universal hyperbolic geometry, they do. This is a crucial building block for triangle geometry in this subject. The dual of an orthocenter is called an ortholine---also not seen in classical hyperb

finding the orthocenter - coordinate geometry

In this video, I show how to find the coordinates of the orthocenter. I go through a step by step process of writing the equation of the 3 altitudes of a triangle. Then using algebra to find the point of intersection of the 3 altitudes. The concepts of linear equations and perpendicular li

A brief history of Geometry III: The 19th century | Sociology and Pure Mathematics | N J Wildberger

The 19th century was a pivotal time in the development of modern geometry, actually a golden age for the subject, which then saw a precipitous decline in the 20th century. Why was that? To find out, let's first overview some of the main developments in geometry during the 1800's, includin
