Length contraction

Length contraction is the phenomenon that a moving object's length is measured to be shorter than its proper length, which is the length as measured in the object's own rest frame. It is also known as Lorentz contraction or Lorentz–FitzGerald contraction (after Hendrik Lorentz and George Francis FitzGerald) and is usually only noticeable at a substantial fraction of the speed of light. Length contraction is only in the direction in which the body is travelling. For standard objects, this effect is negligible at everyday speeds, and can be ignored for all regular purposes, only becoming significant as the object approaches the speed of light relative to the observer. What is Length Contraction?

What is length contraction? Length contraction gives the second piece (along with time dilation) of the puzzle that allows us to reconcile the fact that the speed of light is constant in all reference frames.

Length Contraction is NOT an Illusion!

Special relativity is full of weirdness like length contraction and time dilation. It's the result of something called a Lorentz transform. It's almost exclusively done algebraically, but it makes way more sense if you do it geometrically. Brilliant for 20% off: http://brilliant.org/Scienc

Special Relativity Part 3: Length Contraction

Time dilation was pretty weird, huh? Well we aren't done yet! Time is relative, and so is space! Different observers measure different lengths for objects and journeys. It's called length contraction, and it's another important part of special relativity. Weird stuff! Watch the whole Mode
