Spacetime symmetries

Spacetime symmetries are features of spacetime that can be described as exhibiting some form of symmetry. The role of symmetry in physics is important in simplifying solutions to many problems. Spacetime symmetries are used in the study of exact solutions of Einstein's field equations of general relativity. Spacetime symmetries are distinguished from internal symmetries. (Wikipedia).

What is a Symmetry?

Symmetries show up everywhere in physics. But what is a symmetry? While the symmetries of shapes can be interesting, a lot of times, we are more interested in symmetries of space or symmetries of spacetime. To describe these, we need to build "invariants" which give a mathematical represen

Spacetime Diagrams: An Easy Way to Visualize Special Relativity (Physics by Parth G)

If you've seen a distance-time graph before, you'll pick up spacetime diagrams very quickly... and understand their true power in visualizing special relativity! A spacetime diagram is any diagram that shows the behavior of an object through space and time. However, the term most commonly

Relativity 8 - the yardstick of spacetime

The final piece of the puzzle falls in place. Herman Minkowski showed that Special Relativity defines a spacetime invariant - the "proper time" - between two events. Einstein's insight into the equivalence between falling and floating allowed him to realize that this also applied to Genera

Special Relativity Intro: Reference Frames & Spacetime Diagrams

Special relativity gives us a powerful new way to think about physics. In order to apply special relativity, we first have to understand coordinate systems! Here we talk about defining coordinate systems using rulers and clocks, as well as using spacetime diagrams to draw world lines. Spe
