Local flatness

In topology, a branch of mathematics, local flatness is smoothness condition that can be imposed on topological submanifolds. In the category of topological manifolds, locally flat submanifolds play a role similar to that of embedded submanifolds in the category of smooth manifolds. Violations of local flatness describe ridge networks and crumpled structures, with applications to materials processing and mechanical engineering. (Wikipedia).

Commutative algebra 44 Flat modules

This lecture is part of an online course on commutative algebra, following the book "Commutative algebra with a view toward algebraic geometry" by David Eisenbud. We summarize some of the properties of flat modules. In particular we show that for finitely presented modules over local ring

Commutative algebra 60: Regular local rings

This lecture is part of an online course on commutative algebra, following the book "Commutative algebra with a view toward algebraic geometry" by David Eisenbud. We define regular local rings as the local rings whose dimension is equal to the dimension of their cotangent space. We give s

Saddle points

Just because the tangent plane to a multivariable function is flat, it doesn't mean that point is a local minimum or a local maximum. There is a third possibility, new to multivariable calculus, called a "saddle point".

Commutative algebra 22 Flatness, tensor products, localization

This lecture is part of an online course on commutative algebra, following the book "Commutative algebra with a view toward algebraic geometry" by David Eisenbud. In this lecture we introduce flat modules, show that R[1/S] is flat, and show that vanishing, flatness, and exactness are all

Jacob Lurie: A Riemann-Hilbert Correspondence in p-adic Geometry Part 1

At the start of the 20th century, David Hilbert asked which representations can arise by studying the monodromy of Fuchsian equations. This question was the starting point for a beautiful circle of ideas relating the topology of a complex algebraic variety X to the study of algebraic diffe

Kęstutis Česnavičius - Purity for Flat Cohomology

The absolute cohomological purity conjecture of Grothendieck proved by Gabber ensures that on regular schemes étale cohomology classes of fixed cohomological degree extend uniquely over closed subschemes of large codimension. I will discuss the corresponding phenomenon for flat cohomology.
