Whitehead link

In knot theory, the Whitehead link, named for J. H. C. Whitehead, is one of the most basic links. It can be drawn as an alternating link with five crossings, from the overlay of a circle and a figure-eight shaped loop. (Wikipedia).

Albert Einstein, Holograms and Quantum Gravity

In the latest campaign to reconcile Einstein’s theory of gravity with quantum mechanics, many physicists are studying how a higher dimensional space that includes gravity arises like a hologram from a lower dimensional particle theory. Read about the second episode of the new season here:

What is General Relativity? Lesson 8: Intro to the metric connection and the induced metric.

This lesson is an introduction to the concept of the metric connection followed by a long exercise in classical differential geometry. It is a long lesson because I complete a full example: the derivation of the metric of the "glome" induced by the Euclidean metric of 4-dimensional space.

Connectedness

In this video, I define connectedness, which is a very important concept in topology and math in general. Essentially, it means that your space only consists of one piece, whereas disconnected spaces have two or more pieces. I also define the related notion of path-connectedness. Topology

Karen Vogtmann - On the cohomological dimension of automorphism groups of RAAGs

The class of right-angled Artin groups (RAAGs) includes free groups and free abelian groups, Both of these have extremely interesting automorphism groups, which share some properties and not others. We are interested in automorphism groups of general RAAGs, and in particular

Relativity 8 - the yardstick of spacetime

The final piece of the puzzle falls in place. Herman Minkowski showed that Special Relativity defines a spacetime invariant - the "proper time" - between two events. Einstein's insight into the equivalence between falling and floating allowed him to realize that this also applied to Genera
