Jean-Baptiste Joseph Fourier (/ˈfʊrieɪ, -iər/; French: [fuʁje]; 21 March 1768 – 16 May 1830) was a French mathematician and physicist born in Auxerre and best known for initiating the investigation of Fourier series, which eventually developed into Fourier analysis and harmonic analysis, and their applications to problems of heat transfer and vibrations. The Fourier transform and Fourier's law of conduction are also named in his honour. Fourier is also generally credited with the discovery of the greenhouse effect. (Wikipedia).

Who said math was useless? Joseph Fourier invented equations. Abstract indeed, and yet our modern way of life relies heavily on these equations: they are at the basis of everything involving a signal. So, if you like listening to music, texting or watching YouTube videos, you now know whom

Joseph Fourier developed a method for modeling any function with a combination of sine and cosine functions. You can graph this with your calculator easily and watch the modeling in action. Make sure you're in radian mode and let c=1: f(x) = 4/(pi)*sin(x) + 4/(3pi)*sin(3x) + 4/(5pi)*sin
