Calculus of variations

Hilbert's twentieth problem

Hilbert's twentieth problem is one of the 23 Hilbert problems set out in a celebrated list compiled in 1900 by David Hilbert. It asks whether all boundary value problems can be solved (that is, do variational problems with certain boundary conditions have solutions). (Wikipedia).

Algebraic geometry 49: Hilbert polynomials

This lecture is part of an online algebraic geometry course, based on chapter I of "Algebraic geometry" by Hartshorne. It gives a review of the Hilbert polynomial of a graded module over a graded ring, and classifies integer-valued polynomials.

Karen Uhlenbeck: Some Thoughts on the Calculus of Variations

Abstract: I will talk about some of the classic problems in the calculus of variations, and describe some of the mathematics which was developed to solve them. We will begin with the Greeks and end with some of the tantalizing problems of today. This lecture was given by the 2019 Abel Lau
