Tiling puzzles | Recreational mathematics | Packing problems
Conway's puzzle, or blocks-in-a-box, is a packing problem using rectangular blocks, named after its inventor, mathematician John Conway. It calls for packing thirteen 1 × 2 × 4 blocks, one 2 × 2 × 2 block, one 1 × 2 × 2 block, and three 1 × 1 × 3 blocks into a 5 × 5 × 5 box. (Wikipedia).
Conway's Game of Life on a Torus
Conway's Life rule is often run on a flat grid with wrap-around. Here we do the same thing but with the sides joined together to make an actual 3D torus. Generated with open source software: http://code.google.com/p/reaction-diffusion/

Generalized Conway Game of Life - SmoothLife2
The method allows for stable structures. However stable structures and gliders at the same time are difficult to get. At least starting off the random initialisation.
